Stockholm is ready to welcome the global news media community in June 2027. The city is compact, easy to navigate and shaped by the water that surrounds its islands—so even a short walk can feel like sightseeing. Here are the essentials for a smooth arrival and a memorable stay.

From Arlanda Airport to central Stockholm

Arlanda Express is the fastest and a sustainable way to travel between Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Stockholm Central Station. The non-stop journey takes 18 minutes, and trains arrive in the heart of the city. Buy your ticket on the Arlanda Express website.

From Stockholm Central Station, the Congress venue—Folkets hus (House of People), Barnhusgatan 12–14—is an easy six-minute walk.

Getting around Stockholm

Stockholm’s SL network brings together the metro, buses, commuter trains, trams and selected ferries. For a single journey, simply tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard or American Express card on the green reader. Remember to use the same physical card or device when transferring. If you expect to travel more often, the SL app also offers single and multi-day tickets. The Stockholm subway system is said to be the world’s longest art exhibit – 110 kilometers long, and roughly 90 of its stations showcase unique paintings, sculptures, mosaics, or raw bedrock designs.

Stockholm is highly walkable, and many central neighbourhoods are close to the Congress venue, Folkets hus. Comfortable shoes are a good idea: waterfront paths, bridges and old streets make walking one of the best ways to discover the city.

What to see before /after attending the Congress

Start in Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town, for cobbled lanes, colourful façades and the Royal Palace. It is an easy place to wander without an itinerary and a good introduction to the city’s history.

For a distinctly Stockholm afternoon, head to Djurgården. This green island is home to several leading museums, including the Vasa Museum, where you can see the remarkably preserved 17th-century warship. The island is also pleasant for a walk by the water.

On Södermalm, combine city views with independent shops, cafés and restaurants. Fotografiska, the contemporary photography museum, is nearby and stays open later than many attractions. If you have a little more time, add a short ferry ride: Stockholm is built across islands, and the journey is often as enjoyable as the destination.

A fitting city for the global news media community

Sweden has a special place in the history of independent journalism. In 1766, the Swedish Parliament enacted the Freedom of the Press Act, the world’s first legislation guaranteeing free communication of information, and introduced the principle of public access to official documents. That tradition of openness gives Stockholm an especially meaningful setting for conversations about journalism, trust and the future of news.

Practical essentials

Currency and payments: Swedish krona (SEK). Stockholm is largely cash-free.

Language: Swedish is the official language, and English is widely spoken.

Electricity: Sweden uses type C and F plugs, 230V and 50Hz. Bring an adapter if needed.

Weather: At the beginning of June Stockholm has an average daily temperature from 10 °C (50 °F) to 20 °C (68 °F). June brings long days and plenty of evening light, but conditions can change. Pack layers and a light waterproof jacket.

Water: Tap water is safe to drink; bringing a reusable bottle is encouraged.

Taxis: It’s recommended to use an established operator like Taxi Stockholm for booking a ride. Uber and Bolt are also available.

The World News Media Congress is the annual meeting of news publishers, editors and media owners worldwide. Organised by WAN-IFRA, it is hosted in a different city each year. Since 1961, the Golden Pen of Freedom has turned the spotlight of public attention on repressive governments and journalists who fight them. The Pen has, on several occasions, secured the release of a publisher or journalist from jail or afforded him or her a degree of protection against further persecution.

No, the Congress will not be livestreamed. We hope you will join us in person to enjoy the full programme, networking opportunities and the unique event experience.

What is the dress code for the conference?

Business-casual or smart professional attire is recommended for Congress sessions. Smart-casual attire is appropriate for social events unless otherwise specified.

How can I access speaker presentations and recordings after the event?

Congress presentations and recordings will be made available through WAN-IFRA’s Knowledge Hub. Permanent access is included for WAN-IFRA members, as well as DistriPress and FIPP members. Non-member participants will receive access for a limited period. Further details will be shared after the Congress.

How do I register, and what does it cost?

You can register through the Tickets page by following the on-screen instructions. Prices vary according to WAN-IFRA membership status and booking period, so we recommend registering early. Discounts are also available for groups of three or more delegates, as well as NGOs and academic participants. Please visit the Tickets page for current rates and eligibility details.

What is included in my registration fee?

A regular Congress ticket includes access to official Congress sessions, AI-powered live translation during sessions, coffee breaks, networking lunches and the Awards Night/Gala. It does not include social-event guest or companion passes, VAT where applicable, visa application fees where applicable, travel or accommodation.

How do I pay for the ticket?

We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Diners Club, JCB and China UnionPay payments worldwide. For information about other payment methods, please contact us at congress@wan-ifra.org.

Do I need a physical ticket to enter?

You do not need a separate printed or digital ticket. Your registration confirmation email is your proof of registration, and you will collect your Congress badge on site. Your badge is your admission pass for the Congress and any social event included in your registration. Instructions on badge collection will be shared via email closer to the event.

How do I pick up my badge on-site?

Can I add a Social Event Guest Pass later?

What is the refund and cancellation policy?

Cancellation refunds are based on when we receive your request:

• 30 days or more before the event: your registration fee will be refunded, less a 10% non-refundable handling fee.

• 14–29 days before the event: 50% of the registration fee will be refunded.

• Fewer than 14 days before the event: no refund will be issued.

Exceptions may be considered in cases of documented illness or a verifiable force majeure event. Please refer to WAN-IFRA’s General Terms and Conditions for full details.

Travel & accommodation

Where should I stay, and are there recommended hotels with delegate rates?

Stockholm is especially popular in June, so we recommend booking early to secure your preferred accommodation.

How do I get to the Congress venue?

House of People is approximately a six-minute walk from Stockholm Central Station. From Stockholm Arlanda Airport, the Arlanda Express takes around 18 minutes to Stockholm Central; alternatively, allow about 40 minutes by car or taxi. Please visit the Venue page for maps and further travel information.

Could you assist with visa applications?

Sweden is part of the Schengen Area, and visa requirements depend on your nationality. Please check the Swedish Migration Agency website or contact your nearest Swedish embassy or consulate for the latest requirements, and allow plenty of time for your application. Once you have registered, the Congress team can provide a supporting invitation letter if needed; please email congress@wan-ifra.org.

Networking & the Congress app

Is there a dedicated Congress app for scheduling and networking? How do I access it?

Yes. The WAN-IFRA Congress app is designed to help you plan your schedule, reserve places in sessions that require preregistration, discover attendees and exhibitors, receive event updates and arrange meetings. Registered delegates will receive download and access instructions by email closer to the event.

Where do I find my Congress app event code?

The app should recognise your registration when you sign in using the same email address you used to register for the Congress. If you are asked for an event code, check that you are using the correct email address; logging out and signing in again may help. App access is available to fully registered Congress delegates and approved media. Social-event guests do not receive access.

Will an attendee list be available before the event?

For privacy reasons, a public attendee list will not be published. In the Congress app, you can view participants who have opted in to the attendee directory and use the networking tools to connect and arrange meetings.

How do I connect with other attendees before and during the event?

The Congress event app will allow you to view participants who have chosen to appear in the attendee directory, send connection requests and arrange meetings. You will also have many opportunities to meet peers in person during breaks, networking lunches, sessions and social events.

Are there structured networking sessions, or is it mostly informal?

You can expect a mix of formal and informal networking opportunities. Time around sessions, networking breaks, lunches and social events is designed to help participants meet and exchange ideas.

Will there be Wi-Fi at the venue?

Yes. Complimentary Wi-Fi is planned throughout the venue for Congress participants.

What is the Golden Pen of Freedom Award, and is the ceremony open to all attendees?

The Congress offers a moment to reflect on the global state of media freedom and acknowledge the brave individuals and organisations which risk much to keep publishing.

The awarding ceremony on 7 June 2027 is included with full Congress registration and with the social event guest pass.

What is the dress code for the social events?

Smart business or cocktail attire is recommended for the social evenings.

Media

I'm a journalist. When will media accreditation applications open, and how can I apply?

Media accreditation applications will open in February 2027. To submit an early application, please contact us at congress@wan-ifra.org and include a brief introduction, the organisation or publication you represent, and links to some of your recent work.

How can I arrange an interview with a speaker or a WAN-IFRA representative?

To request an interview with a Congress speaker affiliated with WAN-IFRA, one of its communities, programmes or initiatives, please contact congress@wan-ifra.org. Unfortunately, we are unable to coordinate interviews with external speakers. To interview a speaker who is not affiliated with WAN-IFRA, please contact them or their organisation directly.

What is the Code of Conduct for the Congress?

WAN-IFRA is committed to providing a safe, respectful and inclusive environment at all its events. The Event Code of Conduct prohibits discrimination and harassment and applies to participants, speakers, exhibitors, sponsors, volunteers and related social activities. By registering for or attending the Congress, you agree to follow the Code of Conduct.

Do you have a story to share about innovation, transformation or success in your news organisation? We’re inviting suggestions for case studies and speakers to include in the 2027 World News Media Congress programme.

We are interested in people, projects and strategies to inspire, inform or challenge members of the global news media community.

If you work in a newsroom or news organisation and have a project, product or process you think is worth sharing, submit your proposal before the deadline of 30 November 2026 and we will consider it. If you do not hear from us within four weeks of receiving your application, we will unfortunately not be able to consider it this time.

Programming formats for 2027 will include keynotes, case studies, expert panels and roundtable discussions. Remember, diversity matters and all panel suggestions should be gender-balanced.

What is not included:

Value-added tax (VAT), if applicable.
Social Events Guest Pass (EUR 100 + VAT, if applicable). This pass can be added during the registration process and is exclusively available to guests or companions of attendees. It grants access to social events only and does not include access to the conference sessions. It is not available to publishers or individuals who might otherwise attend the Congress.

Full refund guarantee in the event of postponement or cancellation by the organiser.
Cancellation Policy: If the delegate cancels the registration up to 30 days prior to the event, the registration fee will be reimbursed in accordance with the terms specified in article 2.3, minus a 10% non-refundable handling fee. Up to 14 days before the event, 50% of the amount will be refunded. In the last 14 days prior to the event, no refund will be issued except in cases of illness (with production of a medical certificate) or an Act of God (supported by verifiable documentation).

How to get there

Home of the Congress 2027

The venue for the 2027 Congress — an event about connecting people, sharing ideas, and writing what happens next — is literally called House of People. We’d like to say that was strategic; really, it’s just a fitting coincidence.

Located in the heart of Stockholm, House of People — Folkets hus in the original Swedish — has been part of the city’s story for more than a century. This is a place where people have gathered, challenged the status quo, organised and performed; where movements have found a home, legendary musicians have taken the stage, and generations of Stockholmers and visitors have met under one roof.

In other words, bringing people and ideas together is the custom here.

On 7–9 June 2027, we’ll continue that tradition. The global news media community will be invited to do what this building has always been here for: meet, exchange, inspire and, together, help write what comes next for the news media industry.

A house with stories to tell

The original Folkets hus at Norra Bantorget was inaugurated in 1901.

Sven Markelius, a renowned Swedish architect who created the Swedish Pavilion at the 1939 New York World’s Fair and worked on interiors for the UN Headquarters in New York, was hired to create the new meeting place for Stockholmers and the labor movement.

The new building opened in 1960 — a functionalist landmark and, at the time, one of Europe’s largest and most modern conference facilities.

Norra Bantorget, the square outside, is a historical and cultural place with important memorials and a central role in the history of the labour movement.

Miles Davis and Frank Zappa both played the congress hall in the 1970s. It was also a popular stop on the international touring circuit.

In 2025, the green-listed building completed its first major renovation in over 40 years, preserving as much of Markelius’s original work as possible while quietly modernising everything behind the scenes.On 7-9 June 2027, Folkets hus will do what its name promises: bring people together. We look forward to adding the Congress’ ideas, conversations and connections to its story.

From Stockholm Central Station

Folkets hus is a six-minute walk from Stockholm Central Station — easy to reach from across the city.

From Arlanda Airport (40 km from central Stockholm)

About 40 minutes by car or taxi, or 18 minutes by Arlanda Express to Stockholm Central.

From Skavsta Airport (100 km from central Stockholm)

Skavsta Airport is approximately 90 minutes from the venue by car. There is a direct coach from Skavsta Airport to Stockholm Cityterminalen, taking roughly 80–90 minutes. From Cityterminalen, Folkets hus at Barnhusgatan 12–14 is a short walk.

By car & parking

The nearest highway, the E4, is approximately 9.5 km from the venue. Street parking and garages at Norra Bantorget and Norra Latin are available; garage height limit: 2.10 m.

By public transport

The nearest bus stop is Norra Bantorget, just two minutes’ walk from the venue. T-Centralen, Stockholm’s main metro hub, and Stockholm Central Station are also within easy walking distance. Use the SL app for the latest routes and timetables.
